Smith scored 56 goals for the Whites in 228 appearances, including one on his debut at Liverpool in a 3-1 victory.

"We'd love Alan Smith, he's a wonderful player," Wise told Sky Sports News. "If it's a possibility, then lovely. It'd be a boost for the team, let alone the fans and the club. We're talking about a quality player here who has done it at all levels.

"Of course, I would love him here. We have to wait and see. We've only just found out so I'm sure there will be 20 other clubs interested in Alan Smith, maybe other teams in the Premiership.

"Whether we can get him I don't know. We'll have to wait and see."

Wise also confirmed that Butler is available for transfer after being stripped of the captaincy.

Butler, 34, moved to Leeds on a free from Wolves in July 2004 and has played 106 games, scoring four goals.
