Venables takes the blame

The United boss said that the changes he made to the side contributed to the 4-1 hammering by The Gunners at Elland Road.

Venables said after the game on Sky Sports: "Maybe I've tried to change things so it could be my fault. If we're going to stand still we could carry on doing things as we are now and that wouldn't be good enough.

"Blame for that defeat goes to me. We've got to accept this is an outstanding team, and Silva makes a difference to an already outstanding team."

"They definitely started quickly, too quickly for us. It was the last thing we wanted, we held on to theball too long and played into their hands and if you give them space they will really you.

"We have to shift the ball a lot quicker, every time we had a touch they were there early on stealing the ball off us. The warning signs were there but before we did something about it it was too late.

"We were very low at half-time and it was a case of dropping our heads or fighting for it.

It looked like we had the spirit to do it and then got caught cold again. It's early days but we haven't played like we can."
