The League One club are understood to have expressed an interest in Paynter but the 27-year-old is expected to remain at Elland Road and fight for his place under manager Neil Warnock, writes Phil Hay in the YEP.

Paynter recently returned to the fold at Leeds after a long period of inactivity under former boss Simon Grayson, and Warnock named the striker on the bench for his first three games in charge,

But Paynter was not included among his substitutes for Sunday’s 2-0 win at Middlesbrough, and Notts County – managed by Keith Curle, a coach under Warnock at Queens Park Rangers – were looking to recruit the former Swindon Town player for the rest of the season.

County are heading for the League One play-offs after a run of five wins from six games but Paynter, who spent time on loan at Brighton before Christmas, is keen to continue his career in the Championship.

He was signed by Grayson in 2010, joining on a three-year deal from Swindon, but his strike in a league game against Preston last season is his only goal in almost two years Elland Road
