Last year an appeals court overturned a 15-year jail term for Ali Umit Demir who had been condemned in April 2002 for the killing's and ordered a retrial.

The court ruled that it had not been established that Demir, who is still detained, was guilty of killing both men.

Thursday's hearing heard that a medical report, which could determine if blood found on the knife Demir used was from both victims and not simply Speight's, was not yet available.

His sentence will be halved if his reponsibility for both deaths is not proved in which case he would be released.

Post-mortem examinations showed Speight had 12 flesh injuries, including two stab wounds, and Loftus had 26 flesh injuries, including five stab wounds.
