The 28-year-old striker has been suffering from a cartilage problem and had been hoping to nurse the problem through to the end of the campaign.
Cresswell spent three months on the sidelines earlier this season with ruptured knee ligaments but a knock in training made him miss the draw at Leicester and a decision to procede with surgery was quickly made.
The surgery will involve either the cartilage being shaved or stitched up to help stop the discomfort.
