The 25-year-old defender was given the armband for the opening-day win at Scunthorpe United after proving his skills in leadership during pre-season.

He is currently the club's longest serving player, being the only player to have still been at the club when David O'Leary was in charge.

He made his debut under Terry Venables in 2002 and has played under Peter Reid, Eddie Gray, Kevin Blackwell, Dennis Wise as well as Gary McAllister.

He has also witnessed several chairmen, two relegations, administration and a Play-Off final.

"He is a respected figure amongst the younger players at the club," McAllister said. "He sets a great example on the training ground. So he ticks a lot of boxes for me."

Richardson made his Leeds debut as a second-half substitute against Hapoel Tel Aviv during the 2002/03 UEFA Cup campaign.
