Middlesbrough have signed former Leeds United defender Sam Byram on a free transfer.

The 32-year-old full-back left the Whites earlier this summer after a second spell with the club.

Byram made 80 appearances over the past three seasons and helped Leeds win the Championship title in 2024/25, featuring 36 times.

“I’m buzzing to be here,” Byram told the 'Boro club website.

“It’s a club I know well from playing against them over many seasons, so I’m very familiar with the place and delighted to be here.

“It’s a great club and a big club, and one that I’m really happy to be part of."

He continued: “I’ve been around this league for a number of years and had a couple of promotions in that time, so I know what it takes.

“It’s an incredibly tough league and a long season, but it’s a great squad and great group.

“If I can add a bit of experience and a bit of quality, that’s what I’m here to do.”

It is unclear how long Byram will sign for, though the chances are it will be a one-year contract until the end of the season. It will see Byram reunite with Luke Ayling, who remains a key player at the Riverside.
