City striker Clayton Donaldson scored in the 20th minute when he went past keeper Mark Wilberforce to make it 1-0 and then they increased their lead two minutes after the break when right-back Darren Craddock hit a superb shot into the top corner of the goal.

Donaldson missed further chances as well as handling in the build-up to a disallowed effort from former Leeds trainee Craig Farrell.

York defenders Nathan Peat and James Dudgeon both received cautions.

Former Middlesbrough striker Andy Campbell was expected to turn out for City but he instead opted to feature as a trialist for Conference rivals Halifax Town.
