The South African striker, who joined Leeds on a 12-month contract on the last day of the summer transfer window, put the seal on a 3-0 victory over Rotherham United with two opportunistic goals in last 20 minutes.

Josh Falkingham had given Leeds a 31st-minute lead with the only moment of class in the first half, and Somma's efforts helped last season's totesport.com League East Division champions consolidate the 1-1 draw they claimed at Grimsby Town a fortnight ago.

Repeated downpours hindered the fluency of the fixture and neither side looked comfortable on a wet surface but the opening goal, when it came, was the result of a special finish from Falkingham.

The young midfielder - a late stand-in for Andy Robinson who was named in the original Leeds line-up but was held up by traffic before kick-off - collected a pass from Neil Kilkenny on the edge of the box and clipped a controlled finish into the top corner of Jamie Annerson's net.

Falkingham's strike lifted United's energy after a lethargic start, and Kilkenny almost added a second two minutes later when his low free-kick whistled past a post with Annerson beaten.

Striker Tresor Kandol - included after his appearance on the bench for Saturday's first-team match against Stockport County - also threatened with a chipped finish which spun away from goal.

Rotherham rallied at the start of the second half as left-back Stephen Brogan tested Casper Ankergren with a powerful shot which the Dane punched away from goal.

But Somma sealed the win when he ran onto Kandol's flicked header and slipped a shot under Annerson, and he completed the scoring by pouncing on a late defensive error and scoring from close range.
