A young United were the better team against a more experienced Albion side for most of the match, but faded in the later stages as tired legs took hold as they lost to Steve Nicholson's fine effort eight minutes from time.

Leeds reserves boss David Geddis said: "The defining factor against a very experienced team was fatigue in the younger players just at a particular point.

"That was the only difference. We played very, very well and didn't deserve to lose."

The Whites created the best of the first-half chances and Jonathan Howson, who scored in his first two outings for the reserves this season, and David Brown both had shots saved by Baggies keeper Russell Hoult inside the opening 12 minutes.

Later in the half Robert Bayly lobbed over the bar, Tomi Ameobi fired wide and Howson again shot over from Simon Madden's cross.

Leeds continued to press after the break and Hoult again denied Brown, before the visitors began to get into the game.

Jonathan Lund made a great save from Michael Nardiello before Nicholson's late winner.
