Metalurg Zaporizhzhya 1 - Leeds 1

Last updated : 03 October 2002 By Elland Roader

Leeds held a 1-0 lead from the first leg, courtesy of Alan Smith's late goal at Elland Road.

The early minutes in the Meteor Stadium were cagey, with Leeds playing with just Harry Kewell in attack.

After 17 minutes Eirik Bakke met an Ian Harte free-kick from the left, but could not keep his header down under string pressure from Fabio Duarte.

Six minutes later Alan Smith tried a delicate chip over the home keeper, but within a minute it was 1-0 to Zaporizhya, as Duarte curled a left-foot effort against the crossbar with Paul Robinson beaten.

Youngster Irakli Modebadze was on hand to head the ball over the stranded Robinson from close range.

Dominic Matteo was denied an equaliser a couple of minutes later as Andriy Glushchenko made an astonishing save from the defender's close-range blast.

The rest of the first half was a scrappy affair, with Leeds thrown out of their stride by the goal.

After the break, Lee Bowyer dragged a 25-yard shot well wide of target as Leeds began to find their rhythm again.

Just before the hour mark, Bowyer tried his luck from distance again, firing his left-foot drive over the crossbar from 20 yards.

Midway through the half, both sets of players were embroiled in a melee, with Bowyer and Nick Barmby getting involved in some afters.

Eighteen minutes from time, Armen Akopyan struck the outside of the post with a curling 25-yard free-kick as Leeds almost conceded a killer second goal.

However, 13 minutes from time Barmby snatched the all-important goal, sidefooting home from close range at the far post, after good work by Kewell down the left.

Late on the home side were reduced to ten men, as Uros Milosavljevic was red-carded to end the game on a miserable note for the beaten Ukrainians.
