Leeds United 1 (Nketiah 81) Brentford 0
Substitute Eddie Nketiah’s goal on his home debut, nine minutes from time handed Leeds United a 1-0 victory over Brentford at Elland Road.
Brentford had the first chance of the game, Sergi Canos drove forward before striking on goal from 25 yards, but his tame effort proved to be an easy stop for Kiko Casilla.
The game came to life in the 24th minute, Bryan Mbeumo nearly broke the deadlock, but he struck the post with a curling strike from 25 yards for the visitors.
Leeds then hit the Bees on the counter attack and broke forwards, with Mateusz Klich firing a volley on goal, forcing David Raya into a decent stop.
Ezgjan Alioski put a good cross into the box from the left, which Bamford met with a header under pressure, but his effort went just over the bar.
Moments later Alioski delivered another fine delivery and Bamford did superbly to get to the ball first ahead of Raya, but saw his glancing header bounce agonisingly wide of the post.
Brentford went close from a free kick eight minutes before the break. Mathias Jensen whipped in a cross from the right flank and the ball took a couple of ricochets before landing safely in the arms of Kiko Casilla.
Half time: Leeds United 0-0 Brentford
Leeds made a bright start to the second half winning successive corners, Adam Forshaw struck on goal after being teed up from just over 20 yards, stinging the palms of David Raya.
Pablo Hernandez then tried his luck when a corner came out to him on the edge of the shot, but he pulled his effort wide.
The Whites saw a penalty appeal for handball turned down when Mateusz Klich struck on goal, before the Poland international crossed for Stuart Dallas, but he couldn’t find the target.
Nketiah was introduced in the 76th minute and five minutes into his home debut fired Leeds into the lead. Helder Costa broke down the right flank and into the box, before teeing up Nketiah, to delight the 35,000 fans attending the midweek fixture.
Leeds then saw out the closing stages, to secure another three points and extend the unbeaten start to the season to five games.
