Bridges limped off with a ruptured Achilles tendon after only six minutes, to be replaced by Robbie Fowler. It was a savage blow for Bridges who was making only his second start since recovering from Achilles and knee injuries which kept him out for almost two years.
Immediately after Bridges had limped off, a spectator moved menacingly towards Leeds manager Terry Venables in the dugout and had to be led away by stewards.
And there was even more torment to come for under-fire Venables. Malaga won a 14th minute throw-in on the left, Kiki Musampa gave Danny Mills the slip and cut the ball back for Dely Valdes to shoot between Paul Robinson and the near post for an important away goal.
Leeds scored the quick equaliser they so badly needed in the 23rd minute. Gary Kelly sent over a left-wing cross which Malaga couldn't clear.
Fowler, standing beyond the far post, clipped the ball back to the other upright where Eirik Bakke volleyed his first goal since February, from a couple of yards out.
Robinson made excellent saves from Romero, Dario Silva and Manu but Valdes struck again ten minutes from the end, cutting inside Jonathan Woodgate to score with a powerful left-foot shot into the far corner.
