Beckford's goals took his pre-season tally to three in two games as Leeds United started their three-match Irish tour with a 2-0 win at Galway United.

Beckford is already looking sharp in readiness for the opening league game at Scunthorpe on August 9.

On-trial Paul Telfer, 37, was included alongside Paul Huntington in Leeds' central defence and after looking calm and assured the Scot was fortunate not to concede a penalty early in the second half.

Galway, the Irish League Premier Division's bottom club, included player-manager Jeff Kenna, 37, in their line-up.

Beckford, a scorer against York last Friday, had a goal disallowed in the 19th minute but opened the scoring seven minutes later. The nimble striker beat veteran Kenna for pace before shooting left-footed and low into the far corner from the edge of the six-yard box.

Immediately after the interval Beckford took Andy Hughes' pass and chipped the ball over the keeper and in off the bar for his second.

Beckford was one of five Leeds players substituted on the hour, Canadian trialist Marcus Haber replacing him up front, and Gary McAllister made four more changes with 17 minutes left of a largely disjointed second period.

Leeds United: Ankergren (Martin, 73), Richardson (Gardner, 73), Telfer (Michalik, 73), Huntington, Sheehan (Parker, 73), Howson (Bayly, 63), Hughes (Douglas, 63), Johnson (Sweeney, 63), Beckford (Haber, 63), Showunmi, Robinson (Prutton, 63).
