On the first day League clubs have been able to make loan signings since the transfer window closed a week ago, the midfielder rejoins Saints boss George Burley who managed him at Ipswich before he joined the Whites.

Burley said on the Saints website: "Jermaine is an ex-Ipswich player who had an excellent five or six seasons there and played Premiership football. He did very well at Crewe under Dario Gradi and I am delighted to have got him. At this stage of the season I feel he can be a great asset."

Speaking on the Stellar Group website, Wright added: "I was obviously looking to get some first team football under my belt so when the opportunity came up to talk to George I was eager to try and sort something out. George is one of the best managers I have worked with and it will be a great chance for me to get some more games under my belt this season and help Southampton climb up the table."

Former Crewe, Wolves and Doncaster midfielder Wright cost Leeds £500k in 2004 and he has already had a three-month loan spell at Millwall earlier this season, making 15 league appearances for them.
