Wise Wants An 'Orrible Leeds

Last updated : 27 October 2006 By Kevin Markey

Wise, 39, said: "I've told them that I want them to be like the Leeds of before, who were horrible. I've explained I want a bit of nastiness."

Wise showed he means business by taking the captaincy off veteran centre half Paul Butler and handing the armband to Kevin Nicholls, a midfielder.

Wise added: "Kevin is captain now, with Shaun Derry vice-captain. It was important for me to make a young, up-and-coming player captain. He was captain at Luton and he's got a bit of bite about him.

"Nicko is the type I like and he's a leader. I played against him a couple of times myself and I didn't like it. He kicked me a couple of times and it hurt. There's a horribleness about him that I like."

"They know where I'm coming from now, I'm straight and honest, and if I have to point the finger, I'll point the finger.

"But I told them: 'I'm quite bewildered by the position you lot are in.' It amazes me where they are in this division, because they look very sharp.

"They need confidence, they aren't quite together as a bunch.

"I need to add maybe one or two but there's a lot of quality once we've got the injuries cleared up."

"I want this club back in the Premiership at some stage. When, I don't know. We can't say this year or next year, ask me again in four or five months and I may have an answer. First, we must stop the rot.

"I had a long chat with the Swindon players and they all shook my hand. I'm being a bit selfish, but you have to be sometimes. Not one of them would turn down the chance to play for Leeds."

Wise admitted: "When I agreed to take the job, the sack was something I knew could happen one day.

"It's a working relationship. If it does happen, so be it. He'll still be godfather to my children, we'll still be close friends.

"I'm just thinking about doing the job right. I'd have been a fool not to take it on and have a go. If you can make a go of it here at such a massive club, fantastic. It would have been very hard to turn down.

"Vinnie Jones gave me a call to tell me to enjoy the job. He said: 'One day, you might be a legend, like me.'"
