Wilkinson joins the Meadow Lane board 25 years after managing the Magpies and taking them from the old Third Division into top-flight football.
He said: "I felt an obligation because of the fact Notts County gave me my start in the Football League after I had been player-manager at Boston. I also care about the future of this club and clubs like it who I feel are an important part of the bigger picture."
