Wigan Review

The Whites failed to take their chances at the iPro Stadium, hitting the woodwork twice in what was a frustrating afternoon for Garry Monk’s men.

Whilst the defence has improved during the past 6 games, conceding just 4 times after letting in 10 in 6 at the start of the campaign, the goals seem harder to come by.

Chris Wood remains the top scorer with 5 league goals but the striker has not scored in his last three games and defender Kyle Bartley is the second highest scorer with 2.

Wigan have yet to win on their travels and their concession rate - two goals a game away from home - has already seen five clubs take maximum points with defeats at Bristol City, Forest, Sheff Wed, Norwich and Preston, albeit by just the odd goal in each game.

However, they did hold Brentford to a 0-0 draw in their last away trip so will take confidence from that. Wigan's last five league games though have seen just four goals scored (two by the Latics).

Wigan did extend their unbeaten run to three matches on Saturday with another goalless draw at home to Burton leaving them in the drop zone with 10 points from 12 games.

Leeds fell two places to 13th but only remain 4 points of the play-off positions with Birmingham 6th on 20 points.

Despite Leeds’ profligacy in front of goal there is still a sense of expectancy around home games at Elland Road recently after three wins on the spin in the league and while Wigan will not lie down, this is one fixture that the Whites should be able to get three points from.

But United have not won four in succession at Elland Road since December 2013 (five).

Right-back Gaetano Berardi is back from a hamstring problem and could feature for the first time this season on the bench after coming through an appearance with the Under-23s last week unscathed. Midfielders Liam Bridcutt and Stuart Dallas are still out injured. Dallas has been diagnosed with a minor calf tear and is expected to be out for up to two weeks.

The only real concern for Leeds is should they stick with Alex Mowatt on the left hand side for Dallas or give Kemar Roofe a chance to see if he can live up to his much hyped transfer from Oxford United.

Wigan captain Craig Morgan is likely to remain on the bench after returning from injury against Burton.

The Latics have a few players out injured, notably Alex Gilbey (knee and ankle), Reece Burke (hernia) and Donervon Daniels (knee).

Former Leeds left-back Stephen Warnock (1,044) is one of two Championship players to have made 1,000+ touches so far this season (along with Huddersfield’s Aaron Mooy, 1,086).

Hopefully winger Hadi Sacko will keep Warnock occupied tonight.
