Speaking after Leeds had surrendered a 2-1 lead in the last 10 minutes to lose 3-2 at Chelsea, Venables confirmed that it was down to Fowler to decide whether to accept City's offer.

"As far as I'm aware Manchester City have come back in for Robbie and both clubs have agreed a deal. I think there will be some sort of decision from Robbie on Wednesday," said the Leeds boss.

“It’s not really strange. The deal was arranged before and Robbie felt he didn’t want to go at the last minute.

“But City have said they’d like to do the deal again. It was decided that the board would accept the offer and we’re back to where we were before Robbie turned it down.

“The ball is back in his court. There must be a change in his mind to now be thinking about it, whereas before he didn’t want to go. He will decide on Wednesday whether it’s yes or no.”

"The deal is the same as previous. If he goes, and I'm resigned to it, then I don't think I will lose any more players."
