United Hammer Harrogate Town

A very strong reserve side eventually ground out a convincing score.

David Batty completed his first 90 minutes of football of the pre-season in United's 4-1 win over
UniBond League side Harrogate Town to put himself in with a chance of being in the team to face Newcastle on Sunday.

The 34-year-old midfielder was bright throughout and even took two shooting opportunities at Wetherby Road last night.

Having fielded a side that included five first team players, including the likes of Seth Johnson and Ian Harte, reserve team coach Steve Agnew singled out Batty for a special mention on the night.

"We are now nearer to what the lads could call a good level of fitness," said Agnew after watching his reserve side eventually cruise to their second pre-season win.

"Batty also did excellently, he wanted to stay on because he felt he needed the full 90 minutes to get himself ready and he did well for us."

Didier Domi grabbed his first United goal when he opened the scoring on nine minutes, firing in a low shot from the edge of the area into the far corner of the net after his initial effort had been closed down. Not surprisingly, Domi was the classiest player on the pitch. He gave young full-back James Riordan a real working over in his bid to gain much-needed match fitness. Domi played in an experienced midfield that also included David Batty, Seth Johnson and new-boy Goran Trobko.

One time Elland Road youth trainee Mark Ford came close to an equaliser minutes later when he slid in a shot under the body of Scott Carson that ended up wide of the target.

Trialist Andy Watson, formerly with Doncaster, was playing upfront alongside Simon Johnson and missed opportunities when he lobbed two shots over the Harrogate bar and another driven wide.

Strike partner Johnson saw a hooked shot from the very edge of the box unluckily rebound off the bar and then Ian Harte was just over the top with a free-kick before the interval at which Leeds held a one goal lead.

The second half was barely underway when it was stopped to find a replacement linesman after the original official appeared to pull a muscle in his leg and had to limp off the pitch.

Harrogate's fightback was rewarded with an equaliser when former Darlington striker Glen Naylor got his head on the end of a free-kick to make it 1-1.

A minute later and Carson had to be on good form to deny the hosts the lead, Colin Hunter's initial shot was blocked by Matthew Kilgallon and then the follow up from James McDaid was superbly tipped over by the United keeper. Harrogate then hit the bar with a curling shot from substitute Ben Sherwood.

Sub Jamie McMaster eased United's nerves when he thumped home Danny Mills' cross to make it 2-1 with just under 20 minutes left.

Robbie Whellans, who found Carson an effective form of defence, saw his shot deflected wide. Then a thunderous Hunter shot was expertly tipped over by the Leeds keeper.

United left it until the last five minutes to make the victory comfortable, scoring twice with the first from Stephen McPhail after he lashed home Domi's cross at the far post.

Matthew Kilgallon then hit a similar shot from inside the area on 90 minutes to make it 4-1 on the night to a relatively experienced United side.

Domi was another one who caught the eye with his performance: "Didier plays in a wide area and looks a real threat with his gliding pace," added Agnew.
