The Whites are thought to be eyeing Lee Hendrie, the 28-year-old former England international, while Southampton have also been linked as the midfielder prepares to leave Aston Villa.

Veteran defender David Weir is also wanted by both Leeds and Sheffield United according to reports today. The Scottish international has been offered a new one-year deal to remain at Everton but on reduced terms.

Kevin Blackwell may make a move if United are in the Premiership next season, while Sheffield United see the experienced centre-half as an ideal signing for their return to the top-flight.

Florent Sinama-Pongolle is a also possible target for United. The French U-21 international striker has struggled to make an impact at Liverpool since arriving in England, and is currently training with his former club Le Havre in his homeland.

He spent this season on loan with Blackburn Rovers who have so far given little indication of whether they are keen to make the deal permanent or not.

Meanwhile, Hendrie's team mate at Villa Park and former Leeds winger James Milner has returned to Newcastle and is unsure of his immediate future. The Toon are apparently open to offers but it is uncertain whether Villa will make a permanent transfer.

This has alerted Leeds who may see Milner as the type of player they need if they make it back into the Premiership. It is reported that Leeds have asked Newcastle not to do anything until they know what division they will be playing in next season.

Milner is thought to be keen on a move back to United if they are playing Premiership football. Other clubs eyeing Milner are Manchester City, Everton and Portsmouth.
