The True Cost Of Being A Footy Fan

Reserach states that it now costs £3,036 to follow Leeds for a season, compared with £1,918 in 1997.

On top of ticket prices, the increase is the result of inflation-busting hikes in petrol, food and drink prices, the Conservative Party say after commissioning the research.

Tory shadow Chancellor George Osborne said: "The rising cost of living is hitting football fans hard."

The Conservatives have based their calculations on a season ticket holder attending all away games, and a team playing 12 cup or friendly matches each year.

They used food, drink and fuel prices from the Office of National Statistics, which have already been overtaken by further price increases.

The ONS figures include an increase in the average cost of a pint of lager from £1.77 in 1997 to £2.66, and the cost of a litre of petrol going up from 61p in 1997 to £1.05.

The Tories also explored cost increases at other Yorkshire clubs.

They claim the cost of being a Sheffield United fan has increased from £1,668 in 1997 to £3,085 in 2008.

Sheffield Wednesday supporters have seen their costs going up from £1,756 to £2,852 over the same period.

Whilst the cost of being a Barnsley fan has increased by £1,065 during the 11 years of the Labour government, the Tories say.

A survey in March for Virgin Money found that one in seven fans will not renew their season tickets and one in five do not take their children to matches because of costs.

Adult season ticket prices at Elland Road for the 2008/09 campaign range from £440 in the East Stand's family area to £650 in the West Stand and East Stand Lower, while the cost of junior passes starts at £170.
