Taylor: Is It All Really Ridsdale's Fault?

Last updated : 08 May 2004 By Kevin Markey

'Leeds United slide into the Nationwide League without a penny in their pocket and with debts up to their eyeballs. There, but for the grace of the football god, could be a number of other clubs, not least Manchester City.

'But a couple of years down the line is it all really Peter Ridsdale's fault? Has the performance of some of the Leeds players been down to the fact that their former chairman got it so wrong?

'Do boardroom decisions mean that you play so poorly that relegation becomes an inevitability. Biggest number of defeats, lowest goals scored, highest goals conceded. Even allowing for the players sold that is some kind of record to lay at the door of the boardroom.

'As in all dressing rooms there are diverse characters, but what a player is really made of shows up in one place only, and that is when the chips are down and you are out on the pitch playing for your football life. I dread to contemplate the amount of buck passing that will have taken place at Leeds.

'For sure the club have been in dire straights for some time and, yes, management decisions both on and off the field have to be questioned. But as at all clubs it finally comes down to what happens on the pitch and that in the main is the players' responsibility.

'Some players will leave Elland Road without a care as to what state they are leaving the club in. Not their fault you see. The fact that they have only played and ended up being relegated will not enter their minds.

'All to do with Peter Ridsdale. Can anyone remember him scoring a goal, making a last-gasp tackle, bringing off a great save? No, I can't either.'
