The experienced winger completed 37 minutes in Durham as his recovery from a long-standing Achilles problem gathers momentum and he now hopes to make a second outing when Leeds' second string host Everton on April 19.

Kevin Blackwell said: "We'll see what the reaction is over the next few days but he got through it okay. He needs time to get games under his belt, and the important thing was introducing him to the competitive element again."

The midfielder played 35 minutes as a second half sub after replacing striker Tomi Ameobi and came through the game without any problem at all.

Jermaine Beckford had given Leeds the lead with his second goal for the reserves after quarter of an hour when he tucked away an Ameobi pass after an error by defender Peter Hartley.

Sunderland equalised before the break when former United youngster Martin Woods put a free-kick from just outside the area through the wall and past keeper Ian Bennett in the 38th minute.

Subs unused: Gardner, Howson, Brown.
