Southampton talks with Jesse Marsch break down

Jesse Marsch won't be taking over as Southampton boss after talks broke down, sources have confirmed to 90min.

Marsch had agreed in principle to take over at St Mary's, but talks over a deal with Southampton could not be agreed.

The American, who only left Leeds United just over a week ago, had emerged as the Saints' preferred option to take over from Nathan Jones, who was sacked following last weekend's loss to Wolves.

However, 90min understands the length of deal was an issue for Marsch. Southampton had offered an initial deal until the summer with options to extend, and though a deal was close, the contract could not be finalised.

Southampton had hoped to announce Marsch's arrival on Wednesday, but first-team coach Ruben Selles is set to continue as interim boss and will take charge of Saturday's game at Chelesa.

Southampton are currently sit bottom of the Premier League and are four points off safety.
