The much-travelled striker has played for Celtic, Liverpool, Newcastle United, Norwich City, Blackpool, Linfield, Modena, Livingston and Hibernian before joining MLS team Houston Dynamo last season.
He has also had loan spells with Bury, Wigan Athletic and Scunthorpe United. A deal under Gary McAllister would offer him a way back into English football.
