Smith: We're Good Enough

Smith is also preparing to welcome back two former Elland Road team-mates in Lee Bowyer and Jonathan Woodgate this Sunday when Newcastle provide The Whites season's opener.

It will be centre-back Woodgate’s first visit since leaving Yorkshire for £9m in January while ex-West Ham midfielder Bowyer makes his second trip back.

Despite Leeds’ poor pre-season form, striker Smith is confident his side can make it an uncomfortable homecoming for the ex-Elland Road old boys.

Smith said: “They are two good lads, we never wanted to lose them but they’ve moved on to a great club in Newcastle.

“Although, hopefully, they won’t be getting three points. We know we’re good enough to perform; it’s just a case of going out and doing that.

"Going into Sunday the lads are optimistic and they're the ones that need to be. It doesn't matter what anybody else is saying.

"There are 11 players that are going to cross that line and we know we're good enough to perform. It's just a case of going out and doing that.

"It will be a massive fillip if we can get something from the game. Newcastle will be going into the game confident.

"They've bought some more good players and they're one of the favourites for the title, but we know if we get round them, conduct ourselves as we know we can and play the right way then we've every chance."

The Magpies go into the game on the back of Wednesday's impressive 0-1 win at Partizan Belgrade. Nol Solano's goal gave the Geordies the advantage for the home leg of this Champions League Third Qualifying Round clash.
