Smith Staying Put

Smith was linked with a return to Elland Road after being given permission to leave Old Trafford on a temporary basis last week, but the striker is planning to stay in Manchester and fight for his place with the Premiership leaders.

Dennis Wise confirmed his interest in Smith on Friday, and chairman Ken Bates is believed to have made an approach for the 26-year-old.

Cardiff City aalso made an approach for Smith, who broke his leg in February and has been overlooked by Sir Alex Ferguson this season, and the Welsh club had their offer accepted.

Sources close to Smith, however, insisted a move to Ninian Park was always unlikely, and Manchester United were still believed to be considering Leeds' interest.

Smith now appears to have ended speculation by informing Ferguson of his intention to refuse a move to the Championship.
