Smith England Fear

Speaking on his new video and DVD, 'Alan Smith', he talks about that game and his red card collection: "I didn't think about it. It was just a split-second decision in a game we were trying to win and in which I was trying to make something happen.

"But it's probably had a bigger effect on me now than I ever thought it would.

"I spoke to the coaching staff after the game and they said it would not have any effect on me, but I think it has done.

"It's probably why I have not been in the squad since. It must have had some effect somewhere down the line because in my last two performances for England I was probably one of the best players on the pitch.

"Now I'm just going to have to keep playing football for my club and make it impossible for him (Eriksson) to leave me out.

"I know which red cards I've deserved and which ones I haven't," he added.

"It's stupid and I need to cut it out.

"It's only me who can control it, it's all down to me. Ultimately, it's me who misses out on playing."
