Smith 200 Up And Counting

But Smith, 22, after scoring in the opening two games of the season, against Newcastle and Spurs, has since gone seven matches without a goal.

He had a few chances in the win over Blackburn a fortnight ago and Peter Reid insists he will eventually start taking them.

The manager said: "Of course I would like to see Smithy scoring more often, but he gets himself into scoring positions and contributes a great deal to the team in other ways.

"If he keeps taking up the positions he has been doing, I'm sure the goals will come for him."

A shortage of goals has restricted his international appearances for England, but he remains a firm favourite with Leeds fans and says: "They've been brilliant to me and to the team.

"We need them as much right now as we've ever done. We've got some big games coming up, starting against Manchester United, but we beat big teams last year and there's no reason why we can't do that again."

Smith achieved cult status immediately when he came on as a sub against Liverpool and scored with his first touch at Anfield.
