Showunmi has made 17 appearances this season, scoring three goals, but will be allowed to leave Ashton Gate by City manager Gary Johnson, who is operating a one-in, one-out policy.
Having already won three promotions with Luton and Bristol City, Showunmi will be hoping to gain another promotion medal this year, with Leeds.
The striker would become United's sixth signing of the January transfer window.
