Reid: Sakho Needs Time To Settle

The Senegalese winger received a standing ovation from supporters following his excellent debut against Newcastle on Sunday with many making comparisons with the departed Aussie.

His pace, skill and intelligent play proved one of the major highs of a game which showed Leeds could do a lot better than many of the pundits had forecast.

The French U-21 striker took on and beat right-back Aaron Hughes many a time and caused panic in the Newcastle defence. He set up Mark Viduka's equaliser and looked genuinely surprised when the majority of the crowd stood to cheer him off when substituted in the 60th minute.

Reid understands fans will be looking for a new favourite to idolise but feels Sakho will need time to settle down before any pressure is heaped on him.

"It is unfair to start making such comparisons," he said. "The boy did well on Sunday and if I am honest I think he has done better than I ever imagined he would. His pace will be a valuable asset for us but his skill and intelligence are also going to be key but he has only just arrived here and will need to settle in English football.

"There is more to come from him and I can't wait to see it."

Reid believes pace will be a lethal weapon in the Premiership and is looking forward to welcoming Arsenal's Jermaine Pennant into the squad now that the 20-year-old has agreed to an initial two-month loan period.

Pennant was sent off for punching an opponent as England U-21s crashed to a 3-0 friendly defeat against Croatia at Upton Park last night.

He will not be expected to complete his move to Elland Road until tomorrow at the earliest.

That could mean the writing on the wall for Jason Wilcox, one of the few players not to make an impact on the game last Sunday.
