Reid Pulls No Punches

"We were poor today," Reid said. "You protect your players, but you also like to see the desire and the passion and we didn't have that today.

"The players have to take responsibility. Our fans were terrific, but what they saw wasn't good enough. If I'd thought we'd had a go, then I wouldn't complain and this is not sour grapes because Burnley deserved it.

"The attitude and the desire were not good enough, although I omit Alan Smith from that. Stan Ternent and Sam Ellis have got Burnley bombing. They were great, but they didn't have a lot to beat.

"There were a lot of international players and experienced players out there, but I didn't see what I wanted to see. I'm glad it wasn't the first game of the season.

"The players have to decide whether they want to play for Leeds United, otherwise it's a case of see you later."

Leeds had nine full internationals in their starting line-up. Jody Morris was fortunate to escape a card just before half-time when he scythed down Burnley winger Glen Little to spark a punch-up in this supposed ‘friendly’.

Burnley skipper Paul Weller pushed over Morris and in the ensuing fracas Arthur Gnohere threw a punch at Alan Smith, while his Clarets team-mate Mo Camara grabbed the England striker by the throat.

David Batty and Danny Mills were also in the thick of the melee and it took referee Tony Leake a couple of minutes to restore order. When Leake did calm things he should have sent off Morris and Weller, but instead he let the pair off with just a stern warning.

Morris tried to play down his two-footed lunge at Little. "I'm not quite fit or sharp at the moment and I just mistimed the tackle a little bit," he said. "It's one of these things that happen in football.

"I shook hands with the fella and he was all right. Everyone dived in, but that's team spirit, isn't it?"

Gareth Taylor was taken to hospital with bleeding behind his eye after an incident with Duberry that led to the second penalty, and manager Stan Ternent said he would miss the start of the season.
