Premiership Football Is Boring

Malcolm Clarke, the chairman of the Football Supporters Association, blamed the drop-off on hugely inflated prices effectively pricing the average football fan out of the market.

"For too long, clubs have believed there is no limit to the extent to which they can exploit the loyalty of fans," he says in the Mirror, "and they may find this greed will come and bite them on the backside.

"In the difficult financial climate we all face, the football industry must wake up and smell the coffee."

There could be another reason why Premiership fans are electing to find other ways to spend their Saturday afternoons (and Sunday evenings, Monday nights etc).

And it's one that will make equally dismal reading for football bosses. The fact of the matter is that, unless you support one of the top four clubs, then Premiership football is, frankly, boring.

It's no surprise to see that West Ham fans top this particular table, with a quarter of those surveyed saying they won't bother next season.

The self-serving cartel that is the Champions League means that Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool now have such a financial head start over the rest of the division that the very best anyone else can hope for is to finish fifth.

Some fans would even welcome a flirtation with relegation next time out. At least then there'll be a chance of some excitement in the spring.

So, yes, while rising prices are a problem, there's also a much more serious malaise afflicting the Premiership.

And until football bosses find a way, or even an inclination, to level the playing field, it will only get worse.

Do you think the Premiership has become boring? Will you be renewing your season ticket next year?
