PFA Fans' Player of the Month - October 2013 Contenders

Bournemouth striker Lewis Grabban is giving the stars of promotion favourites Burnley and QPR a run for their money in the race for the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month crown in the Championship.

Grabban was on target in the emphatic 5-2 win over Millwall earlier in the month, taking his season’s tally to seven as the Cherries continue to mount a play-off challenge.

The former Lions’ forward is just one goal behind Burnley’s Sam Vokes and two adrift of the Championship’s leading scorers, Jordan Rhodes (Blackburn) and James Vaughan (Huddersfield).

Vokes, Rhodes and Vaughan were all in the hunt for the September fans’ award – ultimately won by Burnley’s Danny Ings – and they are in the running again for the October prize.

Blackburn have endured a difficult October, losing two of their three league games to date, but Rhodes was the match winner against Watford early in the month with goal number nine.

Huddersfield’s former Everton striker Vaughan shares top spot in the goalscoring stakes, with his ninth goal of the season against Middlesbrough earning Town their only point of the month so far.

Burnley continue to lead the way at the top of the table having put together a six-match winning sequence no-one else has been able to match – not even Harry’s Hoops!

Sam Vokes is looking to follow in the footsteps of striker partner Ings, our September winner, by keeping the fans’ player award at Turf Moor two months running.

Vokes was on target in the 2-0 win at Doncaster and the 2-1 home victory against Reading to take his league tally to eight for the season – two more than England Under 21 new boy Ings.

Meanwhile Derby County, unbeaten in three league games with two wins and a draw in October, certainly seem to be enjoying life under Steve McClaren – nobody more so than Craig Bryson.

The Rams’ midfielder was on target twice in the remarkable 4-4 draw with Ipswich at the start of the month, whilst Jamie Ward equalled Bryson’s feat in the impressive 3-2 win at Watford.

Derby have scored ten goals in their three league games in October, including three against Leeds who recovered from their 3-1 defeat to the Rams to trounce Birmingham a fortnight later.

Their 4-0 demolition of Lee Clark’s Blues should really kick-start their season and there were plenty of individual performances to rave about as three men staked a claim for player of the month. Skipper Rodolph Austin was one of the scorers and led by example throughout, whilst Ross McCormack (1) and Matt Smith (2) were outstanding in an emphatic win.

Several of Harry Redknapp’s QPR all stars are sure to be in the mix for our October award with Charlie Austin and Niko Kranjkar leading the Rangers’ revival.
