Pennant: New Lease Of Life

From the reaction he received when he was substituted just before the end of last night's goalless draw against Southampton, he has quickly won the fans' over.

He certainly impressed with some positive wing play and three or four crosses of genuine quality.

Pennant said: "I was pleased to get my first start for Leeds and hopefully there will be some more to come.

"That will get my confidence up. At the moment, Southampton are my favourite team because I scored that hat-trick against them for Arsenal last season and now I've done well against them for Leeds.

"This loan spell has given me a new lease of life and a chance to prove myself in the Premiership because I haven't played too many games at Arsenal.

"It was very frustrating not getting regular games there but, at the same time, you have to understand there are some great players there.

"When it's time to go back to Arsenal, hopefully I'm going to discuss the possibility of an extension because there is a third month's option. It can only benefit Arsenal when I go back there if I've been playing in the first team at Leeds."

It was his first Premiership start since he scored a hat-trick for Arsenal against the same opponents just before the end of last season.

Leeds manager Peter Reid was encouraged by Pennant's display and said: "I thought Jermaine was great.

"Graeme Le Saux is a quality defender and he had him under pressure throughout the game. It was a good contest. He is a crowd pleaser. He showed good touch, a lot of pace and awareness as well."
