No Plain Sailing For Batty

The midfielder will not be travelling to Dublin with the rest of the Leeds squad for this weekend's Tournament where The Whites are scheduled to play Aston Villa and either Shelbourne or St Patrick's Athletic.

Despite the trip across the Irish Sea taking just an hour, boss Peter Reid has told Batty he can remain in Yorkshire and continue to train at Thorp Arch due to his aerophobia.

The club did look into the prospect of the 34-year-old midfielder making a sea crossing on this occasion, only for it to prove too problematic.

Batty did not travel on last year's pre-season tour of the Far East and Australia for the same reason.

It is not the first time Batty has asked to avoid a flight; last February he travelled by ferry to Rotterdam for a UEFA Cup clash with PSV Eindhoven.

"We are taking just about our strongest squad, although David won't be travelling," confirmed Reid.

"He doesn't like flying and there's no point in asking him to make two ferry trips that take about half a day each just for a couple of days of football.

"He won't be going, but he will be training here at home."

Batty has been gradually working up his match fitness levels having suffered from tendonitis last season and not playing at all for the first team after being left out by former United boss Terry Venables.

Peter Reid will though be taking promising youngsters Aaron Lennon and Martin Woods, who will be given a taste of what life is like as a senior professional and are likely to be given a run out in the second game of the tournament.

Injured duo Seth Johnson and Eirik Bakke will not be travelling, but Lucas Radebe is going on the trip and should play in his first game of pre-season.

Radebe had an operation in the summer to clean out his problematic knee, and the South African has been back running for the past three weeks and is now ready to take part in his first game.
