A statement from the club confirmed the Whites would not take any action after footage of the incident proved "inconclusive".

Referee Michael Jones revealed in his match report that Paynter had been sent off for a head-butt that was seen by his assistant.

The striker, who will now serve a three-match ban, insists he was not guilty of any wrongdoing.

United boss Simon Grayson told the club's official website: "I'm disappointed that Billy will miss three games, but I'm confident in the players we have here."
