Mouth-watering Carling Cup Fixture

Last updated : 29 August 2011 By Kevin Markey

The old rivals will meet at Elland Road in the week commencing September 19 with Simon Grayson looking to “do the double” after masterminding a sensational FA Cup victory over Manchester United 18 months ago.

Grayson’s League One side then caused a monumental shock by claiming a third-round win at Old Trafford in January 2010, a triumph secured by Jermaine Beckford’s iconic goal in front of the Stretford End.

The clash was one of numerous high-profile cup ties involving Leeds in the past two years, and the draw for the League Cup’s third round has thrown up another mouth-watering fixture for Grayson’s squad.

The tie will fall in between Championship games against Bristol City and Brighton, and Grayson said: “It’s the chance to do a double, isn’t it?

“The draw gave the players a little bit of a lift (at Ipswich Town on Saturday) but as soon as it was made, we did our presentation on Ipswich and focused on that. It’s a great tie for both clubs and we had a result at their place a couple of years ago. We’d like to try and do the same at home. But the main things for me will be the Brighton game after it and the Bristol City game before it.”

Writing on Twitter, Manchester United defender and former Leeds captain Rio Ferdinand said: “Leeds here we come!!! Lively Carling Cup draw!”

A date for the tie is still to be confirmed and United will announce ticket details on Wednesday.
