Mendic blames Leeds

"We've tried to make sure we left on good terms, but to be honest, Leeds have not helped themselves," he said.

"Harry and I are both disappointed it's played out like this. The fact is, Harry will be ending up at the club of his choice, not the club Leeds wanted to push him to.

"That club is Liverpool, and Harry has made that very clear. But in this business, clubs want players to go where they can make the most money out of them. That was never going to happen.

"Harry would rather have stayed at Leeds and waited until he got a Bosman in January than go anywhere other than Liverpool. Leeds' decision was whether they would make some money, or none at all.

"And you have to remember this is a player who cost them nothing, has given them great service for nine seasons, and was due for his testimonial year next season. I think Leeds have got a lot from Harry, don't you?"
