McPhail: Players to blame

The Republic of Ireland international has been brought back into the first team picture by Venables this season, and despite the poor results recently, he believes the managers methods will bring results over the coming weeks.

"The players are behind the manager and believe in what he is doing," McPhail said.

"When the results are not going well it is always down to the players, I don't think the manager can take any blame for what happens on the pitch because he picks the 11 he thinks are the best and we've got to go out and represent him and the fans.

"We are disappointed with the way we have been playing, but we've got a big month ahead of us now when we can get some results

"The new manager has been brilliant with me. The first day at pre-season he got us all together and he's helped a lot of the young lads especially, telling us how to cope with things and with different tactical things that are going on on the pitch.

"As a player, especially a young player, you want to learn from everyone and Terry has come in and helped me enormously, especially the defensive side and the tactical side of the game."
