The Scottish international, speaking in Australia on Leeds United Television, said: "I was captain in China and a couple of games last season when Rio was injured, so I've just taken it on from there really.
"I was disappointed to lose Rio because at times we had a good partnership together, he's a big loss to the club but we have to look forward now.
"We still have some very good players at this club and we will do alright without him."
