Movie Of The Week;

GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK
Cert PG, 93mins
MAD Rating: 5/5

Good Night, And Good Luck is a brilliant flick with superb performances and excellent direction. A film that looks and sounds incredible, deserving of its six Oscar nominations.

It's shot in black and white and based on the true story of CBS TV presenter Edward R Murrow (David Strathairn) who risked everything to expose the underhand tactics of Senator Joe McCarthy.

From 1950 to 1956 McCarthy led the anti-Communist witch-hunts that gripped America and destroyed the careers of anyone he suspected of having Communist tendencies.

But Murrow and his team of journalists (played by George Clooney, Robert Downey Jr and Patricia Clarkson) weren't fooled and exposed the Wisconsin senator for what he really was.

In a series of See It Now TV specials - each rounded off with Murrow's trademark payoff 'Good night, and good luck' - McCarthy was revealed as an incompetent and vicious bully.

In only his second film behind the cameras, Clooney has captured the urgency and camaraderie of the newsroom with plenty of busy, hyperactive camerawork - not to mention the cigarette smoke. Clooney also co-wrote the script.
