"I’m 61 now so I must have been 36.

I was at the Sheffield United game, behind the goal in the Leeds end and it was breathtaking that game because it was so fast and a real humdinger of a game. Everything was happening. And then it was a rush back to a pub – The Lion in Castleford, to watch Liverpool finish it off by beating Man United.

It was some day that and some run-in and towards the end when Man City beat us 4-0, I think a lot of people thought that it was it then.

But we always kept in front of Man United and when they got beaten at West Ham, I think that’s when we all thought ‘we can win it’.

It was just a shame that we didn’t build from there but you can’t take anything away from that team. It was fantastic, it was great for the city and because I had already seen them win two titles I remember thinking ‘this is for the young ‘uns’.

Ferguson says that Manchester United lost it and we didn’t win, it but we won it by four points in the end so that was just sour grapes.

I worked in Harrogate at the time and when Man U went down to West Ham there was a coach load of their fans going down to West Ham just down the road.

So we put this big board up that said ‘up the Hammers’. I just wish we’d have been there at two o’clock in the morning when they came home!"
