Sullivan picked up an injury in the friendly win at Nottingham Forest last weekend and was replaced by trialist Darren Ward.

The Mirror suggests the Whites may make a move for Carson as a precaution.

After being picked up from local club Cleator Moor Celtic, Carson was with the Leeds Academy and reserve sides for little more than a year before earning his first start - a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

Following some impressive displays for Leeds, he earned a move back to the Premiership with Liverpool in January 2005.

By this time Carson was a well-established member of the England Under-21s having made his debut against Holland in February 2004.

In the first few months of his Anfield career enjoyed a number of fine performances including their 2-1 Champions League quarter-final win over Juventus and these were soon followed by his first call to the senior England squad for the USA Tour in May 2005.

Carson spent the last two months of the season at Sheffield Wednesday on loan, playing nine games.
