Riley, from Leeds, was the referee for the UEFA Cup quarter-final tie between Levski Sofia and Schalke and interrupted play last Thursday night to report racist abuse aimed at Schalke's German international Gerald Asamoah.

Asamoah was subjected to racist abuse in the form of monkey chanting by Levski Sofia fans and Riley responded immediately by informing the fourth official, who passed the message on to Levski officials.

After the game, Riley was labelled a "homosexual" by the president of Levski Sofia, Todor Batkov who was quoted as saying, "This British homosexual broke the game."
