The striker has been struggling with a leg injury for several weeks although he played nearly 90 minutes in the 2-2 draw against Liverpool 10 days ago.
The weekend break has given Smith time to get fit and Gray told the Yorkshire Evening Post: "We'll see how Alan goes this week. Dave Hancock (physio) did a great job to get Alan on the park for the Liverpool game because his leg was a mess.
"We were apprehensive for him, but he came through well until he took a slight bang near the end. The week off has given him a bit more time and we're hopeful."
Eirik Bakke is almost certainly out after tearing a muscle in his thigh against Liverpool.
