Leeds Held At Ashton Gate

David Batty, who did not make a single first-team appearance last season due to injury and a major fall-out with Terry Venables, was in Peter Reid's starting line-up.

Reid also took the opportunity to give French trialists Joel Sammi and Sebastian Rostoe a run-out, bringing them off the bench just before the hour mark.

The game was instantly forgettable, although Bristol City will count themselves unlucky not to have won. They almost took the lead after just five minutes when Christian Roberts seized on a Michael Duberry back pass to force Paul Robinson into a smart save and Matthew Kilgallon was forced to clear Roberts' second attempt off the line.

Leeds' best chance fell in the first half to Nick Barmby, who missed the target by inches after latching on to Jason Wilcox's cross. There were also good opportunities for Alan Smith and Mark Viduka.
