Leeds Await Referee's And FA's Report

Leeds had eight players booked during a fiery game at Deepdale and are now waiting to hear if the Football Association will take any action.

The FA are obliged to investigate the number of bookings, but only after reading the report of match referee Mick Thorpe.

Stephen Crainey and Richard Cresswell both asked Thorpe to review the yellow cards which lead them to being sent off, but there are no grounds for appeal and the pair will definitely miss the final at the Millennium.

The Whites were unhappy at other bookings handed out on the night, stand-in skipper Gary Kelly questioned why so many Leeds players were booked as opposed to just one Preston player and their hopes now rest with Thorpe's report and the FA taking a lenient view.

Kevin Blackwell and Billy Davies had been critical of Phil Crossley's handling of the first leg at Elland Road the previous Friday, but the duo were more diplomatic after Monday's game.

Thorpe was questioned by the United players who felt he was too quick to book one of their own, while Cresswell's first yellow card was a mystery to everyone inside Deepdale.

Like Cresswell, Jonathan Douglas also picked up a booking for what was thought to be mistaken identity and there is a chance the FA will review the game again before making any decision.

But, while any potential fine will be absorbed by the monies on offer for reaching the final, there will be no compensation for the loss of Cresswell and Crainey.

"There's nothing we can do," said Blackwell. "It's disappointing that we've got two players suspended, particularly because we've got a pretty settled team. But it's going to give someone else a chance."
