Dagenham & Redbridge's debut in the competition brought a 2-1 defeat at home to Luton Town. The league newcomers fell behind to a 42nd-minute penalty by former Leeds midfielder Matthew Spring.

A deflected shot by Drew Talbot doubled the lead after 68 minutes but Ben Strevens pulled back a goal shortly after coming on as a substitute.

Another sub, David Foley, scored two late goals to help 10-man Hartlepool United, of League One, to come from behind to win 2-1 away to Scunthorpe United, of the Championship.

Foley's second, which came with five minutes remaining, capped a fine comeback for Hartlepool who had trailed to Martin Paterson's 51st-minute goal for the Iron. The visiting team scored both goals when down to ten men after sub, Ali Gibb, had been sent off for a foul on Kevan Hurst.

Another League One club, Leyton Orient, won 2-1 in their all-London clash with Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road.

Jason Demetriou put Orient in front in the 55th minute and Adam Boyd added a second from the penalty spot nine minutes later. Martin Rowlands scored shortly after but it was scant consolation as Rangers were booed off by angry home fans after being second best to the O's for most of the match.

Rochdale were denied victory in extra-time by former Leeds striker Richard Cresswell's late goal for Stoke City that forced a 2-2 draw at Spotland, but the League Two side recovered to win 4-2 in the penalty shoot-out.

Milton Keynes Dons, also of League Two, beat Ipswich Town, of the Championship, 5-3 on penalties after a 3-3 draw at home.
